Save Money this Winter
December 22nd, 2009
When the nights draw in and it gets cold outside it can be easy to think nothing of turning on the central heating and cranking it up to the maximum. Warming the whole house up, even the rooms you are not likely to go in.
This may feel great at the time, but what about when the bill arrives? Bigger than usual bills may mean cutting down on some luxuries for the next month, this won’t feel so great.
Why not save money by only having the heating on when you are in the house? Even better, turn the radiators off in the rooms you hardly ever use. Most people have a front or back room they rarely use on a consistent basis, normally reserved for use when guests come over for dinner.
There is also one other major benefit to cutting down on the heating – and that is the environment. The more the central heating is on, the more fuel and energy is used. Of course, if you have heating that is powered by solar panels (or similar) then it’s not as much of a problem, but in most places these are very few and far between.
If you have a bigger house or commercial property you may want to consider an air leakage test. This will measure the amount of airflow that is passing out of your house when all usual routes for escape are closed. Areas can be identified and repaired, ensuring that the building is more energy efficient and as a result will require less energy to be heated up. Ultimately resulting in more money in your wallet. Everyone’s a winner!
Saving money and the environment at the same time, can’t be bad and will allow for luxuries in other areas of life that previously may have been out of reach.
